What is Vitamin A and how can it help accelerate your skincare routine?

What is Vitamin A?

Vitamin A is a group of unsaturated nutritional organic compounds that includes retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid, amongst others.

The most commonly known form of Vitamin A is Retinol which is a derivative that has been used for anti-ageing and found in many skincare products.

You've likely seen this little word written on countless product labels time and again and wondered, what does Retinol actually do?

It is often used to:

Improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by enhancing collagen production in the skin

Help clear acne

How does it work?

Retinol works by prompting surface skin cells to turn over and die rapidly, making way for new cell growth underneath.

They hamper the breakdown of collagen and thicken the deeper layer of skin where wrinkles start. Retinol also works wonders for improving the state of acne prone skin, thanks to its chemical composition.

As it is a of derivative Vitamin A, it stops dead cells from clogging pores and causing some forms of acne. Since Retinol also exfoliates the upper layers of the skin, it allows anti-acne creams and gels to penetrate better, enhancing their results.

In short, Retinol could be the one acne-banishing ingredient that your skincare routine is missing.

What are the best retinol products available?

The acclaimed R45 Reversal from BeautyBio visibly firms and rejuvenates your complexion. Formulated with a patent-pending TriGLO complex, the retinol treatment increases intensity with each phase to push your skin's performance to the max, in just 45 days.

What about beauty devices and Retinol?

Beauty devices that involve massage such as the Clarisonic Mia Smart Firming Head and Hayo’u Beauty Restorer are perfect to use alongside retinol.

However, it’s not recommended to use retinol products alongside Light Therapy devices, as retinoids make you more sensitive to light. Microcurrent pushes skincare ingredients into the skin further, so it’s not recommended to use retinol alongside this as it can react more than it should and cause adverse effects. The same goes for Radio Frequency and Microneedling, as it absorbs too much and can make the skin dry.

Our product expert says…

Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant that is amazing at smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and balancing out skin tone texture. It’s also fantastic for helping out with surface scarring and pigmentation - there’s not much it can’t do. I’d recommend using this in your 30s as it can dramatically slow down the ageing process.
