How it Works: Light Therapy

LED Light has been around for decades. Even NASA used the technology in plant growth experiments on board the Space Shuttle in the ’80s. As with most things involving NASA, it’s equal parts intriguing and effective. So it’s no wonder LED therapy was adapted by the beauty industry to create some pretty amazing devices to use in salons and at home. Here we tell you all about the different types of LED Light Therapy and the products you can find them in at CurrentBody.

What is LED Light Therapy?

When used consistently, over time, LED lights are thought to penetrate your skin at different depths and cause various reactions in your skin, such as fighting acne-causing bacteria, plumping skin and reducing wrinkles. LED light is not as potent as a laser and the results take months rather than weeks to surface, but there’s none of the scarring or downtime that can come from the more aggressive treatments. A handful of sessions will take your skin to infinity and beyond.

What do all the different colours treat?

Red Light Therapy

Targets: Fine lines, wrinkles and inflammation

How: One the most used colours in LED therapy because it is known to improve circulation, fine lines, and wrinkles. It targets inflammation, and can help tackle acne and rosacea. Ageing, scarred and sun damaged skin can also benefit from red light.

Blue Light Therapy

Targets: Acne

How: Blue light eliminates spot causing bacteria, acne vulgaris, while leaving the good bacteria in it’s rightful place. Blue light can be used on its own but it’s often paired with red light, giving purple light. Red and blue lights have very specific wavelengths and, when used together, kill acne bacteria and help the skin to heal.

Green Light Therapy

Targets: Pigmentation

How: Green light targets dark circles, pigmentation, broken capillaries and sunspots. It also calms irritated or over-stimulated skin.

Yellow Light Therapy

Targets: Fine lines and wrinkles.

How: Yellow light reduces redness and wrinkle-causing inflammation while boosting circulation. It works by stimulating the rejuvenation process within your cells to improve the density of your skin (collagen and elastin production drops after the age of 25, causing those pesky fine lines).
