What is EMS?
EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation. It works by using electrical stimulation of the muscle fibres underneath the skin’s surface to boost the muscle and regeneration.
It is often used to:
Tone and train muscles to elevate training performance during exercise.
As a post-exercise recovery and pain-relief tool for athletes.
How does it work?
Normally, your muscles contract naturally as they respond to electrical signals sent from your brain. An EMS machine or device replicates these impulses, allowing them to contract on demand.
Usually you would apply an electrode pad to different parts of the muscle, and an electrical impulse will be signalled to the desired area. It works by “re-teaching” the brain how to activate a particular muscle or muscle area.
What devices use EMS?
There are a number of devices that use EMS technology. If your looking to use EMS to elevate your exercise results, Slendertone are a brand that boast a plethora of professional toning devices.
Whether you want to tone your abdominal or buttock area, an EMS device is great for treating those hard to tone areas that are hard to get rid of with regular exercise. For example, the Slendertone Abs8 Unisex Toning Belt works by stimulating all of abdominal muscles rather than just the superficial fibres giving you a stronger, more effective workout.
If you’re looking to use EMS to rehabilitate or gradually build up your muscles, Tenscare are a brand that have used the technology to create a number of pain relief and muscle rehabilitation devices you can use at home. For example, the Tenscare Perfect EMS & Tens Unit device uses EMS technology to provide pain relief in joints and tone, shape and rehabilitate the muscles.
