What is blue light therapy?
Blue Light Therapy is a form of Light Therapy that uses waves of blue light to treat a number of skincare concerns. It’s a safe, non-invasive drug-free treatment that requires no topical products to conduct treatments, it is also considered a form of phototherapy.
Most famously known for treating acne, it can also be used to treat uneven skin texture and enlarged oil glands, as well as reducing the appearance of scars caused by acne.
Most effective for treating mild to moderate acne (Propionibacterium acne), it’s completely pain-free and can be used on the face, back and neck.
How does it work?
Blue Light Therapy works by the wavelength penetrating the skin, going into the sebaceous glands, where bacteria and oil cause acne.
The LED diode can work on any skin type and it targets the chemical in the bacteria which causes acne. Working below the surface of the skin to target bacteria, it essentially ‘tricks’ the bacteria into self-destructing, meaning you can use it both as a preventative measure or to catch the breakouts as soon as they come up.
LED Light Therapy devices are measured in nanometers (nM).
What devices use Blue Light Therapy?
A wide variety of devices feature Blue Light Therapy to treat acne, and for combined treatments, also include Red Light to target the inflammation of acne.
