Female Founded: Tera Peterson, Co-Founder and CEO of NuFACE

In homage to International Women’s Day of the 8th March, we’ve dedicated an entire month to celebrating all things female. From brand founders and product innovators to industry leaders, we take a look at the work, life and secrets behind some of beauty’s most successful females.

She’s the Co-founder and CEO of the family-founded company who have transformed the way we age.

Now, we sit down with NuFACE’s Tera Peterson to talk about her relationship with her mum, the definition of real beauty and the future plans for the world’s leading microcurrent brand.

What did you do before running NuFACE?

15 years ago I was working in sales.

Talk to us through the NuFACE story. How did it all begin?

We’re a family owned company, my mum, my sister and I started the brand back in 2005.

Ultimately, it all started with my mum. She’d worked with microcurrent since 1985 and would treat the most famous faces in Hollywood.

Ultimately, it all started with my mum. She’d worked with microcurrent since 1985 and would treat the most famous faces in Hollywood.

However, she realised that as her clients were getting older, she recognised that they needed more frequent microcurrent treatments - and NuFACE was born!

What does an average day look like for you?

There isn't really an average day. For example today I’m filming, then tomorrow I’ll be treating faces, then I’ll be on a conference call talking about business - it’s so varied.

What’s been your biggest challenge you’ve faced at work?

As the company has grown we’ve faced many different challenges along the way. In the beginning it was really the dynamic of a family owned business, originally I was working with both my mum and my sister - but it’s changed so much.

Today, we have over 100 employees and the competition is getting even more fierce. So a real challenge is staying ahead of the game and making sure we’re 10 steps ahead of everyone else.

What do you think the secret to success is?

I’m very passionate about NuFACE and I’m very persistent - I think that’s key to any successful entrepreneur.

One piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

Live in today. I was always wanting to graduate early etc. but you have to enjoy every step along the way.

Sometimes I think it would be great to go back to the days that we were working from the house - it’s all really about enjoying every day and every single part of the journey.

In a world of instagram filters and fillers, what does real beauty mean to you?

Real beauty to me is all about confidence. So, you know when you see a man or a female walk down the street and you can just tell they feel really good.

This can come in all shapes and sizes, there is no perfect mould.

How do you think women can support women more?

I think supporting women in the workplace is really important. Especially within the beauty industry, we know the beauty industry better than anyone else, so it’s really just about working together as a team.

Lets just lift each other up.

What advice would you give your daughters?

I have twin girls and they’re both so different, I want to make sure I celebrate how different they are - keeping their individuality is really important.
