In case you hadn’t heard, it’s our 10th birthday. Yes, we’ve been bringing the best of professional salon technology to homes all over the world for an entire decade.
To celebrate, we’re taking a nostalgic look back at our journey over the last ten years and have rounded up 10 interesting facts you probably didn’t know about CurrentBody.
1. We’re based in Manchester
Whilst many other international beauty retailers base their headquarters in London, we’ve stuck to our northern roots and run all of our main operations from what is known to the team as ‘D6’.
Based in Stanley Green Business Park, Cheadle Hulme, Unit D6 is home for the majority of our team, from the warehouse and customer service team to our CEO, this 306 sq meter unit is where all the action happens.
2. It all began with two
The CurrentBody story started back in 2009, when our two founders, Laurence and Andrew were introduced.
A perfect pairing, they combined Laurence’s passion and knowledge for the beauty and wellness industry with Andrew’s vast knowledge of ecommerce - and the rest is history. The twosome joined forces to create a website solely geared towards beauty devices, and the dual force of them together saw them cement CurrentBody as the go-to website for this niche.
3. And then there were three
After quickly realising their clear vision, the pair hired their very first employee, Sophie Longmoor - and she’s still here 10 years later.
Sophie began her career at CurrentBody listing new products, before moving on to help the customer service team deal with enquiries. Today, she heads up our purchasing department - running a very tight ship she ensures we have the stock we need to fulfil our orders on a global level.
Today, the team has grown to over 60 people, including a dedicated China based team.
4. Our first brands were…
The very first brands that launched with us were Compex, Globus, Wellbox, TriPollar and Clarisonic.
5. There was once a ‘Clarisonic Sunday’
Our success with the press started back in 2014, when India Knight wrote about one of our best-selling devices, the Clarisonic Cleansing Brush.
Sophie remembers the day like yesterday, she explains: “When India Knight did an article on Clarisonic in The Sunday Times sales sky-rocketed. We referred to it as ‘Clarisonic Sunday’ for a very long time.”
6. We’re in the press - a lot
As a niche beauty retailer, it means we know quite a lot about beauty devices. And being experts means that we’re often approached by journalists and beauty editors to comment on the latest trends, new technologies and why our devices really work. From the Sunday Times and The Telegraph to Vogue and Elle - you name it, we’ve been in it.
7. 2018 was a pivotal year for us
In March 2018, we secured a £5 million investment from NVM Private Equity which has enabled us to expand our team and grow internationally.
8. We’re taking over the globe
Just in case you didn’t know, we now have a total of 9 localised sites that ship beauty devices around the world. At the moment, these include Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, along with the USA and Australia.
But we’re not stopping there, in 2019 this exponential growth is set to continue with a number of new site launches, along with a joint venture with Thakral Corporation which will see us expand into China.
9. We’ve made it on to the Northern Tech 100 League Table for the last three years running
A huge honour for CurrentBody, the table ranks the fastest growing tech companies in the North of England and we’ve made it onto the list for the last three years.
Our CEO Laurence commented on our 2017 placing, “We’re delighted to feature alongside some incredible companies and be part of a thriving Northern tech scene.”
10. We’ve got a store
Whilst we are predominantly an online business, we also have a pop-up store in the iconic House of Fraser store on Oxford Street in London.
Featuring some of our best-selling brands such as NuFACE, Clarisonic and FOREO, we’re proud to say that this is currently the only place in the world that you can try and buy these devices all in one place.
