Home Use Device Working Group

CurrentBody are proud members of the HUD Working Group: Promoting safety and efficacy

The beauty technology industry is ever changing. Following a rapid growth of professional “directed energy” (such as laser, IPL, LED, IR and RF), many companies have been making the move to the next frontier: home use devices. They provide a great supplement or alternative to salon-based treatments, which can often be costly and inconvenient. These changes are happening quickly, with industry observers predicting global retail revenues approaching $5 billion over the next few years.

Numerous global corporations and smaller, dedicated companies have taken a responsible role in this evolution. Special attention has been paid to ensuring excellence in engineering, safety and clinical testing. However, at the other end of the spectrum, some opportunists have tried to capitalise on the “boom”, offering products with unproven performance, questionable construction and potentially unsafe features.

With the support of the European Society of Laser Dermatology (ESLD), a range of industry leaders sponsored a “Safety Roundtable” in London, November 2010. The focus was on the safety of light-based home-use devices. In 2011, the same industry leaders joined together to form dedicated international standards in cooperation with established standard bodies.

Following these discussions, the ASLMS meeting in Florida, February 2012, saw the creation of the “Home Use Device (HUD) Working Group”.

Together the industry leaders work to:

  • Assist in the development of international standards and regulations relating to safe and effective home use of light and energy-based aesthetic devices.
  • Advance the publication of standards to develop best practice recommendations, starting with safety.
  • Encourage and disseminate communications about the efficacy and safety of home-use light and energy based aesthetic devices.
